Throughout the course of the year , most places on Earth goes through four noticeable seasons : summer, autumn fall , winter and spring, each lasting for about 3 months. The seasons experienced by the northern and southern hemisphere always differ by six months — when it is summer in the northern hemisphere, it is winter in the southern hemisphere, and so on. Six months later, the Earth is leaning in the opposite direction. Six months later, the situation is reversed. For locations north or south of the equator , the main feature accompanying each season is a change in temperature caused by the varying amount of sunlight that falls on each hemisphere of the Earth throughout its annual orbit. The hemisphere tilted towards the Sun will experience longer hours of sunlight, and more direct sunlight. As the Sun is higher in the sky during summer, the sunlight reaching the surface is more concentrated. In winter, the Sun is lower in the sky, and sunlight is spread out over a larger area. During spring and autumn, both hemispheres receive about the same amount of sunlight.

The show’s format is based on a Dutch dating show called Daten in het Donker meaning “Dating in the Dark”. Three men and three women are sequestered in separate wings of the house, unable to have any conversation or contact with the opposite sex unless in the dark room. Initially, all six contestants have a group date in which they all sit at a table in the dark room exchanging names and getting to know one another’s voices and personality types.
After this date, each contestant can invite another contestant for a one-on-one date; these dates are also held in the dark room. Throughout the show, the host, Rossi Morreale , provides the men and women with additional insights by providing personality profiles showing which contestants are their best matches and also allowing them to view items the others have brought to the house, such as items of clothing or luggage. Other episodes include sketch artists drawing contestants’ impressions of each other.
After the one-on-one dates, each contestant can choose to invite another that they wish to see. The contestants enter the dark room for the final time and are revealed to each other one at a time. During the reveal process the couple must remain silent. While being shown in the light, a contestant cannot see the other contestant’s reaction. Each contestant is standing at opposite ends of the dark room with a very large two-way mirror between them. A color camera films from the dark side of the mirror while the other is illuminated on the other side.
A separate infrared camera films the person on the dark side’s reaction; the two images are combined in post-production. This is done, in part, by using video editing software to fade the infrared image of the person being revealed to black before they are illuminated, then seamlessly showing the color image of the person being revealed as it is faded in and out.

These events are referred to as Equinoxes. At the equator, the sun is directly overhead at noon on these two equinoxes. The “nearly” equal hours of day and night is due to refraction of sunlight or a bending of the light’s rays that causes the sun to appear above the horizon when the actual position of the sun is below the horizon. Therefore, on the equinox and for several days before and after the equinox, the length of day will range from about 12 hours and six and one-half minutes at the equator, to 12 hours and 8 minutes at 30 degrees latitude, to 12 hours and 16 minutes at 60 degrees latitude.

However, that big tree in your backyard has been keeping a detailed climate record for decades. Trees can live for hundreds—and sometimes even thousands—of years. Over this long lifetime, a tree can experience a variety of environmental conditions: wet years, dry years, cold years, hot years, early frosts, forest fires and more. The light-colored rings represent wood that grew in the spring and early summer, while the dark rings represent wood that grew in the late summer and fall.
For example, tree rings usually grow wider in warm, wet years and they are thinner in years when it is cold and dry. If the tree has experienced stressful conditions, such as a drought, the tree might hardly grow at all in those years. Scientists can compare modern trees with local measurements of temperature and precipitation from the nearest weather station. The National Weather Service has been keeping weather records in the United States since , but very old trees can offer clues about what the climate was like long before measurements were recorded.
This field—the study of past climates—is called paleoclimatology. These sources, called proxies, can extend our knowledge of weather and climate from hundreds to millions of years. The information from proxies, combined with weather and climate information from NASA satellites, can help scientists model major climate events that shaped our planet in the past.
And these models can also help us make predictions about what climate patterns to expect in the future. To learn more about another important way scientists study Earth’s climate history, see About Ice Cores external site. The light and dark rings of a tree.

Midnight sun is when at least a part of the Sun’s disk is visible above the horizon 24 hours of the day. As the upper edge of the solar disc disappears below the horizon, the Sun has set, and there is no longer midnight Sun. That the Sun is visible above the horizon does not mean that the Sun is shining. Then there is midnight Sun for about six months. As the Sun rises higher in the sky on the North Pole day by day, the midnight Sun gradually expands south until it reaches just south of the polar circle around the beginning of June.
One of the reasons that the midnight Sun doesn’t end directly on the polar circle, but can also be seen a little further south, is refraction; The fact that light bends when it hits Earth’s atmosphere. Refraction makes the Sun visible above the horizon several minutes before it actually gets there. Before night falls, there are three stages of twilight – civil, nautical and astronomical. During the summer, many areas south of where the midnight Sun can be seen, have what is known as white nights.

Seasons, the four divisions of the year, called spring, summer, autumn or fall , and winter. North and south of the tropics, summer is the warmest season, winter the coolest Spring and autumn are transitions between the two extremes. In the tropics, little temperature variation occurs with the seasons. Like the day and the year, the seasons are based on astronomical occurrences. The seasons, however, are related only to the year itself and not to any other units of time.
In the Northern Hemisphere, spring begins about March 21, summer about June 21, autumn about September 23, and winter about December In the Southern Hemisphere, it is autumn that begins in March and spring that begins in September. Winter in the Southern Hemisphere begins about June 21 and summer about December 22, so Christmas comes in summer. Year after year, the seasons form a never-ending cycle.
The sun is farthest south lowest in the sky and the period of daylight shortest in the Northern Hemisphere about December 22, the date of the winter solstice. From then on, each day the sun reaches a little higher farther to the north in the noon sky and each day the period of daylight is a little longer. About March 21, on the vernal equinox, the sun reaches halfway on its northward journey in the sky; it crosses the Equator.
On that day, daylight and darkness are the same length. The days continue to get longer north of the tropics and the sun farther north in the noon sky until June 21, the date of the northern summer solstice.
